In a recent announcement, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, took to social media to inform about a crucial development in Tamil Nadu's infrastructure. The government has approved an INR 1,338 crore project for an access-controlled highway along NH-40. This highway will span 28 km, connecting Walajapet/Ranipet to the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border. The initiative is set to improve regional connectivity, facilitating smoother travel and boosting economic activities in the region.
The upcoming highway will feature a four-lane main carriageway with paved shoulders, as well as two-lane service roads on both sides. This well-planned design will ease traffic flow for both long-distance travelers and local commuters.
A key component of the project is the construction of a 10-kilometer bypass around Walajapet and Ranipet to alleviate congestion in these towns. The project will also enhance travel safety with the construction of four major bridges and two railway over-bridges.
The new access-controlled corridor is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Chennai and other major cities, including Bengaluru, Tirupati, and Vellore. Vellore, home to the renowned Christian Medical College (CMC), stands to benefit greatly from this highway, as it will ease access for patients, visitors, and medical professionals traveling to the hospital. This enhanced connectivity will also make the region more accessible for trade, tourism, and other activities, further boosting its economy.
The highway's impact on local industries will also be substantial. Walajapet and Ranipet are known for their flourishing leather industry and small-scale engineering units that supply vital components to major companies like Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).
