Aryna Sabalenka told her box to book tickets home midway through her Wimbledon quarter-final against Laura Siegemund. The World No. 1 faced one of her sternest tests of the tournament on Centre Court, as she took on World No. 104 Siegemund - a German veteran 10 years her senior.
It was a trial by fire for Sabalenka, who fought back from a set down and needed two hours and 54 minutes to prevail 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. With her clever shot selection and tactical variety, Siegemund forced Sabalenka to cover every inch of the court. The 36-year-old chased down ball after ball, moving with the energy and agility of a player half her age.
"Honestly, I need some time to cool down and recover after that," a visibly exhausted Sabalenka said after the match.
"She pushed me so much. After the first set, I was just looking at my box thinking, 'Guys, book the tickets - I think we're about to leave this beautiful city, this beautiful country.'"
